The Structural Welder/Fitter is responsible for performing the full range of journey-level structural welding, fitting and fabrication. Must demonstrate specific proficiency with oxy/acetylene cutting/welding torch and applying all aspects of welding procedures, including preheat temperatures, electrode selection, welding process, and quality control specifications in accordance with the specific metallurgical properties of the material involved. This position assists with planning, scheduling, fabricating, and installing complex structural assemblies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (AND OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED)

  • Must be able to review blueprints and design drawings to prepare material take off’s.
  • Will be capable of performing all phases of advanced layout, positioning, aligning, and welding of structural metal products and components in compliance with applicable codes and standards. 
  • Must understand structural steel demolition and modification including:  removal, straightening, reshaping, and reassembly of parts using cutting torches, air arc, plasma torch and power tools. 
  • Must be skilled in the layout and cutting of steel, stainless, and aluminum using oxy-acetylene, plasma torches, band saws, shears and punches. 
  • Must be able to grind, buff, and prep metal parts prior to welding.  Clean up after welding will include removal of all slag, smoke and spatter and proper clean up to produce a quality weld.
  • Must have experience erecting steel structures, platforms, support, stairs, and hand rails. 
  • Knowledge of proper structural bolt up techniques required. 
  • Must be able to calculate the weight of and find center of gravity of complex structures and structural steel members. 
  • Previous experience operating overhead cranes and working with mobile cranes and loaders required.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of complex rigging techniques and be able to perform critical lifts over live process lines.
  • Maintain records of work orders and materials used. 
  • Must be certifiable in all positions for GMAW, SMAW, and FCAW in accordance to ASME and AWS standards.  
  • Must be capable of supervising and coordinating the work of apprentice welders and other crew members. 
  • Comply with Company and customer policies and procedures.
  • Support AES zero-incident safety culture and assume personal accountability and responsibility for safe work practices in all projects, activities, and operations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED with a minimum of seven (7) years related training and experience required. Minimum three (3) years experience in the oil and gas industry and in the arctic environment preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS
Must be able to pass pulmonary function and respirator fit tests. 

Certification in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) in accordance with American Welding Society D1.1 required.

A candidate must be able to meet the following non-exclusive requirements:                                                               
  • Take and pass a pre-employment drug test which may include both UA and hair testing.                         
  • Meet the physical requirements of this position including working in a remote location under arctic conditions.
  • Required to take and pass a Fit-For-Duty Exam.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an access badge for the work location.
The availability of this position is contingent upon the Company’s continued operational needs once training is completed.
