Calling all anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. Spawn a new career this summer!   AES needs your help to fill summer positions with full benefits at Alaska fish hatcheries, where you can put your skills to work to help manage the life cycle of salmon.  These are not cannery/fish processor jobs!  You will be using your craft skills to perform similar jobs as are available on the slope.  Employees who perform well in these positions will receive first priority consideration for AES oil & gas positions beginning as soon as the fall when oil prices improve, and you will continue to be on a priority waitlist if not immediately placed.

Employees will work a minimum of 8 hours a day in the great outdoors, and overtime may be available.  These positions include the following flexibility and benefits:

The AES in-house staffing firm E&P Technology, Inc. (EPT) will be placing individuals for summer hire.  

About Hatcheries

Hatcheries are not canneries/fish processors. A fish hatchery is a place for artificial breeding, hatching, and rearing through the early life stages of animals Alaska hatcheries produce salmon to enhance commercial, sport, subsistence, and personal use fisheries. There are twenty-five private nonprofit salmon hatcheries operating in the State of Alaska, spanning from Kodiak to Southeast Alaska. 

Position Details

The Maintenance Assistant works closely with the Maintenance Manager in the broad areas of preventative and routine maintenance. They will assist in repairs and improvements to the facilities, equipment, and work site.

  • Assists in developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules for all equipment, tools, and facility buildings (including but not limited to: generators, loaders, trucks, pumps, outboard motors, welders, power tools, building electrical systems, building mechanical systems).
  • Act as lead while performing maintenance and repairs on generators, hatchery heating systems, hot water systems, pumps, fuel systems, recycle systems, lake pump housing systems, lighting systems, fire systems, and hatchery water/wastewater systems.
  • Assists in keeping record of maintenance logs, monthly reports, and studies contributing solutions to hatchery problems.
  • Assists the maintenance manager in preparing maintenance section budgets.
  • Helps adapt procedures, techniques, and new equipment to improve work efficiencies.
  • Maintain updated operators manual for fuel systems.
  • Maintain updated inventory/parts list.
  • Fabricate new tools and equipment as needed.
  • Interact with the public and direct inquiries to appropriate departments.
  • Other duties will be assigned to this position as needed.
  • Comply with Company and customer policies and procedures.
  • Support AES zero-incident safety culture and assume personal accountability and responsibility for safe work practices in all projects, activities, and operations.

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong understanding of the tools and practices of various trades (mechanical, electrical, painting, carpentry, plastering).
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated in building mechanical and electrical maintenance.
  • Post-secondary training in an accredited vocational-training school in one of the following trades: Construction, Mechanical, Electrical (Four years of semi-skilled experience in building/plant maintenance will substitute).
  • One year of experience in building and plant maintenance work.
Valid driver's license required.

A candidate must be able to meet the following non-exclusive requirements:
  • Take and pass a pre-employment drug test which may include both UA and hair testing.                         
  • Meet the physical requirements of this position including working in a remote location under arctic conditions.
  • Required to take and pass a Fit-For-Duty Exam.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an access badge for the work location.
The availability of this position is contingent upon the Company’s continued operational needs once training is completed.
